Ideas

How do you get the ball rolling for your story? How that idea gets to you and you write? Almost every time is just something you see and you need to build from there. It is not all figure out. You may see or know people that get ideas and just start writing. You will see people that will get an idea and start outlining. But what if you get the idea and don’t know what to do with it.

So how do you organize the idea? Set on an imaginary table all you got. Characters. Story arc. Main conflict. Whatever you got to set it down. Now, let’s start looking at how we can get the pieces missing of this puzzle. What are you going to write about? Look for the genre. Is the character you creating looks better in a fantasy story? Look for patterns on what can make the story interesting. The villain… ooh the villain.  He or she has to be badass, right? Invest time on those character profiles. Make a backstory.

The main thing you need to do is research and always. The idea you are organizing is about somebody with a terminal illness? Get on the medical books, internet, and interview people. Interview doctors, patients. Pros and cons of that illness. There is always a pro and a con. You got to look for the beauty of things. The dark side of it. You need to become an expert so that whenever somebody that knows about the subject matter reads your story it is trustworthy to the subject.

What do you get at the moment? Is it looking more tangible? Is the story making sense at the moment? Do you need more? You will probably go back and forth with your ideas until it looks as plausible as the cup of coffee you take before starting your morning. It won’t be easy getting all the pieces quickly. You will need to make up characters just to be killed off. You will make scenes that will help your characters grow but won’t move your story that much.  The truth is, that if you invest more of your time getting ready before writing, you will write easier and faster.

Usually, scripts and books can take an average of two years to write. Usually, people who get their prewriting on the point will get their books done quicker. There are people that take two to three months to write but took six months to get the pieces of the puzzle together before. I will discuss in another time more techniques on how to get ideas to help you out with your story.
